Abstract
Meditation can offer dancers practical tools to support focus, emotional regulation, and well-being within the demanding environment of dance training. This article introduces meditation as a contemplative and somatic practice that can help dancers cultivate greater awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. Drawing on a meditation program implemented with contemporary dance students, the authors focus on how simple, adaptable practices can be integrated into dance education to support sustainable training and self-care.
The article provides a practical toolkit for dancers and teachers built around key themes including attention, somatic awareness, emotional and cognitive awareness, self-compassion, and resilience. Suggested practices include short mindfulness exercises, body scanning to deepen awareness of physical sensations and potential injury signals, visualization techniques to recognize thoughts and emotions, and reflections that encourage kindness toward oneself and others. These approaches can be incorporated into daily studio practice, creative work, or recovery periods to help dancers develop greater presence, clarity, and agency. Reflective prompts encourage educators and dancers to consider how meditation might be integrated into their own contexts, creating space for care-centered pedagogies that support both artistic development and personal well-being.
